The upcoming crime thriller L.A. Noire looks to continue that legacy, following the story of one Cole Phelps, a detective tracking down a dangerous serial killer in the world of Los Angeles in the late 1940s.

The game looks to be a very intriguing murder mystery, along the lines of movies like Se7en and Zodiac, though with the distinctive Rockstar style. The recently released cover art for the game reflects this, looking like a poster for a movie rather than a game (hey, there’s an idea…).

The recently released L.A. Noire trailer supports this, looking very much like a trailer for an actual movie that would be seen in theaters. That’s not just because the graphics are so amazing and the character movements so fluid that you could mistake them for real people, but from a plot standpoint. Of course, the graphics do help, the characters’ mouth movements being so exact that you have to just sit there in awe of how far technology has come.

The co-production between Rockstar and Team Bondi was announced to have a May 17th release date recently, so it’s only a matter of time before we can immerse ourselves in what is sure to be an interesting and entertaining story. Rockstar also mentioned that news of pre-order bonuses, as well as exclusive content, would be released very soon, so keep your ears open.

What do you think of the plot of L.A. Noire? Does the 1940s setting hurt or help the story? What do you think the pre-order bonuses/exclusive content will be?

L.A. Noire is set to come out on the Xbox 360 and PS3 May 17, 2011.
